Savory

Breakfast Pie

January 23, 2017

Let’s get real with each other for a second. We all should be having pie for breakfast. The trouble with most pies though is that they’re sweet and sugary and filled with fruit and sometimes we just don’t want to eat that first thing in the morning. Don’t get me wrong, I can have a sweet and sugary and fruity pie for breakfast. No problem. I mean, I’m not made of stone. I sometimes want something with a bit more of a savory kick to it, though. You know what I mean? It really all just depends on my mood. Sometimes we all just need potatoes, eggs and cheese first thing when we wake up. I know I do. To which I say, potatoes are always a definitive yes in my book. So here we are, figuratively standing in front of a Breakfast Pie. Let’s try to not lose our cool and just look at the facts. Fact: Pie should only be eaten for breakfast. Fact: Now we have a valid excuse to eat a double crusted pie as our first meal. Fact: I might be crazy, but this pie is anything but.

Do you remember when I made Breakfast Ice Cream a thing? This is just like that, but so much better. Wait. I’ve definitely lost my mind. Ice cream for breakfast is just as good, so let’s say they’re even Steven. Both on the same level. That makes more sense to me. We now have the choice of eating a savory breakfast or a sweet AND savory breakfast. You can thank later. It’s a win win situation for everyone. We should be rejoicing. We should be celebrating. We should be screaming from the highest rooftops just how much we love Jonathan! I mean, how much we love breakfast pie!

Savory BBQ Pulled Pork Cinnamon Rolls

March 25, 2016

I love to really turn things upside down in the kitchen, especially when it comes to making popular dishes that we’re all used to, and giving them a fun and interesting new makeover. Just like with these savory Falafel Waffles. Homemade falafel made into healthy waffles and then topped with a crazy delicious Mediterranean slaw. It’s just like what magic would taste like, if magic had a taste. I like to keep you guys guessing and just when you think you know what’s going on, I throw a curveball your way and take things in a different direction. As a big fan of cinnamon rolls, I decided that what the world needed more of was savory cinnamon rolls. There are plenty of sweet variations out there that people do so well, and so rather than give you another sweet creation, the next best thing are these Savory BBQ Pulled Pork Cinnamon Rolls. So let’s think outside the box and welcome them with open arms. Give them a big hug, and eat as many as you can.

The dough is not sweet at all, and while yes, I’m calling them cinnamon rolls, there really isn’t any sugar or cinnamon in the filling, although you really could if you wanted to as the sweetness from a bit of brown sugar would be great with the BBQ sauce and pork. So if you’re a fan of BBQ sauce, pulled pork and cheese, then you’ll definitely be best friends with these rolls. They’re the perfect recipe to try out over the weekend. Get started in the morning and while the dough rises and the rolls double in size, you could go around the house and get your chores done or cross things off from your to-do list. By the time the rolls are ready, you’ll be done with everything and you’ll have the greatest reward waiting for you. If you want to make these after Easter and have lots of leftover ham lying around, then by all means, dice up the ham and use it as a filling instead of the pulled pork. That would be a great use for that excess Easter ham.

Irish Nachos

April 10, 2013

I know what you’re thinking, “Nachos aren’t an Irish dish Jonathan. This isn’t something traditionally served in Ireland.” And you’re right. Nachos are a Mexican/Tex-Mex treat. But when it all boils down to it, nachos are freaking delicious no matter where they are served or what they are called. I’m referring to these, as “Irish” nachos because of some of the ingredients I decided to use. I’m recipe re-mixing this bad boy. Throwing out the old and boring—not really I still love regular nachos—and bringing in the new and exciting. We now get to enjoy this classic snack and appetizer with a delicious twist. We should be dancing for joy. Screaming from the top of our lungs. Let’s rejoice and declare it a national holiday. Okay, I think I’ve made my point.

So what makes these nachos so special? What sets them apart from all the rest? What transforms them into “Irish” nachos? It’s not because I think I’m so fancy and I felt the need for an elaborate name, no that’s not it. Okay, maybe only part of the reason. I’m not Irish and I’ve never been to Ireland, so I’m not an expert, although I wish I were. The biggest switch up is that I ditched the tortilla chips. Gone. No more. Get out of here, thank you for coming. Instead this delicious snack starts with potatoes. Doesn’t get any more Irish than that, folks. And if it does, lie to me. Play along and let’s pretend that I’m right or that I’m making sense…for once. But I don’t stop there, no. I also used an Irish cheddar cheese. What?! This is madness! I know! (If you’ve never tried it, you’re missing out. I demand that you stop everything you are doing now and go to the cheese section of your local specialty store and find it. But really, finish reading this first and then go get it). I also decided to use sausage instead of beef because I figure perhaps in Ireland people prefer sausage over steak or chicken or something. I know I do.

So I ask you my friends, what can be better than a large skillet of potatoes drenched in a cheese sauce, topped with browned sausage, sprinkled with tomatoes and scallions and jalapeños, dabbled with guacamole, drizzled with sour cream and garnished with cilantro? If you said “Nothing! Nothing!!” then you are right. You deserve a prize. Hey! How about Irish nachos for everyone?! In case I haven’t convinced you yet, well, let’s just take another gander at these images. We don’t even need to go any further into this post, we can stop right here. This is where the party is at. Whip out a fork. Let’s dig in.

Now that I’ve tormented you with that up there, how about we get started on our Irish nachos? What do we need, what do we need? Well let me show you. It’s a rather simple dish. It doesn’t require any fancy ingredients or special equipment, aside from that Irish cheddar which incidentally if you can’t find don’t fret. Normal everyday cheddar will be just fine. Food like this should be easy to whip up so that you can make it multiple times a week and gorge on it because it tastes so amazing. You’ll thank me for this later, believe me.
